Surf Trip to Australia from Spain: Practical Guide

eVisitor or Work and Holiday visa, best season by coast, spots by level, sharks, flags, campervan hire and insurance for a surf trip to Australia from Spain.

On a Spanish passport, a surf trip to Australia only needs an eVisitor (subclass 651): free, with stays of up to 3 months. If you want to stay a year and work, you need the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). Timing depends on the coast. The east coast gets more swell from late autumn into winter, and Victoria and Margaret River work best in autumn and winter. Take private insurance, because Spain has no health care agreement with Australia, and swim between the red and yellow flags.

Visas for Spanish citizens: eVisitor or Work and Holiday

eVisitor (subclass 651)

This is the tourist visa for EU citizens. According to Home Affairs, it's free to apply for, lets you enter Australia as often as you like within 12 months and stay up to 3 months each time. You can't work on it. For a surf trip of a few weeks, it's the obvious pick.

Work and Holiday (subclass 462)

This is the visa for young people who want to travel and work. Key points:

  • Age: 18 to 30 according to Tourism Australia. If you apply at 30 and turn 31 before the decision, you can still be granted the visa.
  • Length: 12 months from the day you enter Australia.
  • Extra criteria: Home Affairs sets a minimum level of English and minimum education requirements. Check them on its site before you apply.
  • Funds: Tourism Australia mentions about AUD 5,000 in savings you can prove, plus a return ticket or the money to buy one.
  • Fee: Tourism Australia lists AUD 635. Visa charges are reviewed often, so confirm the current amount with Home Affairs on the day you apply.
  • Cap: Spain has 3,400 places a year for the first 462 visa. Check on Home Affairs whether the cap is open.
  • Letter of support: no longer needed from the Spanish authorities since 1 July 2019, according to the Spanish Consulate in Sydney.
  • Work: as a general rule, up to 6 months with the same employer.

A second and third year are possible if you complete specified work in regional areas.

When to go: seasons by coast

Australia is in the southern hemisphere. Summer runs December to February and winter June to August.

CoastRough best windowWhy
East (Queensland and New South Wales)Autumn and winterEast coast lows, which push swell onto the coast, are more common in autumn and winter and peak in June (Bureau of Meteorology).
Victoria (Bells Beach, Torquay)Autumn and winterVisit Victoria says Bells' two main breaks, the Bowl and Rincon, are at their best in autumn and winter.
Western Australia (Margaret River)Autumn and winterTourism Western Australia calls the cooler months prime surf season, with big waves and a thick wetsuit.

If you're learning, beginner beaches with surf schools work most of the year. What changes is water temperature and the wetsuit you'll need. If you want size, aim for autumn and winter. Every season is different, so check surf forecasts before you lock in dates.

Where to surf by level

Beginners

  • Noosa Main Beach (Queensland): gentle waves, recommended by Tourism Australia for first-timers.
  • Currumbin Alley (Gold Coast): a classic place to learn.
  • Byron Bay (New South Wales): Clarkes and Wategos for beginners and longboarders.
  • North Bondi and Manly (Sydney): surf schools and softer waves than the south end.
  • Torquay and Anglesea (Victoria): recommended for beginners by Visit Victoria.
  • Redgate Beach (Margaret River): sand-bottom breaks for beginners and intermediates.

Intermediate and advanced

  • Snapper Rocks, Kirra and Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast): famous point breaks. Snapper hosts a pro tour event.
  • The Pass (Byron Bay): long rides when the swell is up, popular with intermediate and advanced surfers.
  • Bells Beach (Victoria): home of the Rip Curl Pro every Easter. Serious breaks.
  • Surfers Point (Margaret River): powerful swell and barrels. Home of the Margaret River Pro.
  • Cape Woolamai (Phillip Island): for experienced surfers.

Safety: rips, flags and sharks

Red and yellow flags

Red and yellow flags mark the area lifesavers are patrolling, the section they've judged safest for swimming. Surf Life Saving's rule is simple: swim at a patrolled beach, between the flags. A yellow flag on its own means caution and possible hazards. If there are no flags, ask the lifesavers and stay out if you're unsure.

Rip currents

Rips are the number one hazard on Australian beaches. Surf Life Saving NSW reports that in the 2024/25 season rip currents were behind two in every five coastal drownings in that state. Two thirds of coastal drownings happened more than 1 km from a lifesaving service. Learn to spot a rip before you paddle out.

Sharks

The NSW Government's SharkSmart program recommends:

  • Avoid surfing at dawn, dusk and night.
  • Avoid river and harbour mouths and murky water.
  • Stay out with open wounds and away from where people are fishing.
  • Watch for baitfish and diving seabirds.
  • Surf with other people.

The SharkSmart app shows real-time alerts for tagged sharks. Check it on the sand before you paddle out.

Campervan hire: prices and driving licence

A campervan is the most common way to cover the coast with boards. Rough prices for a 2-berth van, checked in November 2026:

SeasonRough daily range
Low (May to August, varies by company)AUD 35 to 80
Peak (December to February)AUD 80 to 160

Check the daily kilometre cap, the excess and the bond. Some companies ask for bonds of several thousand dollars.

On licences: a Spanish licence is printed in Spanish. New South Wales asks for an approved English translation or an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't in English, and Queensland asks for a recognised English translation. The easy fix is to get an International Driving Permit from Spain's DGT before you leave (fee of EUR 10.51, valid for one year) and carry it with your Spanish licence.

Travel insurance

Spain has no reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, so Medicare won't cover you. The official list of agreement countries doesn't include Spain. Get travel insurance with medical cover that explicitly includes surfing. If you're on a 462 visa, the IOM guide published with the Spanish Embassy recommends private visitor health insurance.

Trip checklist

  • Visa: eVisitor for a holiday, 462 for a year with work.
  • Dates: autumn and winter for swell, any season for learning.
  • Medical insurance that covers surfing.
  • International Driving Permit.
  • Wetsuit for the coast and season.
  • SharkSmart app and total respect for the flags.
